New Seminary in the Archdiocese of Washington

USA

The Archdiocese of Washington has announced that it will open a new seminary for college seminarians and seminarians engaged in pre-theology studies. “At a time when the teachings of the Catholic faith seem countercultural, we are seeing an increased interest in the priesthood, particularly among younger men who want to be a part of a new evangelization in society” - said Archbishop Donald Wuerl who has been appointed a Cardinal. “Until now, most of our new seminarians, especially those in college, have had to leave the area for their studies. Now, they will begin their formation here and be an integral part of the local Catholic community from the beginning,” The archdiocese has 67 seminarians, up from 44 a decade ago.

Father Joseph Langford Has Died

Mexico

Father Joseph Langford has died in Tijuana following a yearlong struggle with cancer. He was only 59 years old. In 1979, Father Langford sought Blessed Teresa’s approval for the incorporation of priests into the charism of the Missionaries of Charity. After a year of discernment, she agreed, and the Priest Co-Workers, later named the Corpus Christi Movement for Priests, began. In 1984, the movement became a religious institute and was renamed the Missionaries of Charity Fathers.

Bishops Criticize Selling of Plastinated Corpses Online

Germany

German bishops are denouncing a decision by Gunther von Hagens to sell his plastinated corpses online. Von Hagens has become famous for creating the Body Worlds exhibit. “This is not about new discoveries for science and research, but about picking at bones and spectacle under the guise of medical enlightenment,” said Archbishop Robert Zollitsch of Freiburg, chairman of the bishops’ conference.

Msgr. Marini Had to Intervene

UK

During the Pope's visit to England, the master of ceremonies for papal liturgies, Msgr. Guido Marini, intervened personally to ensure that the altar would be arranged according to the Pope's wishes when he celebrated Mass at Westminster cathedral, reports Damien Thompson of the Daily Telegraph. British liturgists had strongly resisted the "Benedictine arrangement," with a prominent crucifix and candles on the altar.

@Cannoli: 👏 This is a most singular example of idiocy on the part of the Liturgists of Westminster Archdiocese - NOT all of Britain. I understand that their objection was as follows:

In the pre-concillior arrangement, the Crucifix and Candles were placed not on the altar mensa but about the Tabernacle at the bck of or on the east wall to which the altar adhered. Nothing but the sacred vessels for Mass were allowed onto the altar mensa. Therefore, now in the post-concillior church, this rule remaining in force, and since tabernacle and altar mensa are separate [as it was in the early church], why should Crucifix and Candles be placed on the mensa when they were never there in the first place?

However, on the other hand, the Benedictine Arrangement allows for a small edge of the mensa to be uncovered thereby allowing the Crucifix and Candles to be placed on this part of the mensa; the rest of the mensa being covered with three white linen cloths.

BUT! Many arrangements that purport to be the 'Benedictine Arrangement' do not observe this and the Crucifix and Candlesare onthe altar cloths! Therefore, one must ask, were the liturgists against this or against the "Benedictine Arrangement" in general?? ✍️

The British liturgists did not respond when asked if they would have preferred a Jewish menorah , the Muslim Qur'an, a statue of Buddha and a small figurine of Homer Simpson on the altar rather than the crucifix and candles.
