Sophie Magdalena Scholl (1921-1943) was from a Lutheran background but was greatly influenced by the writings of Cardinal John Henry Newman and his “theology of conscience”. Having read the sermon of Cardinal Clemens Graf von Galen (Bishop of Münster) which severely criticised National Socialism, Sophie and other Germans founded the “White Rose” movement.
