...Johannes Brahms composed the melody for this familiar Lullaby in 1868. A number of lyrics have been set to his melody. The original lyric was in German, and entitledWiegenlied: Guten Abend, gute Nacht, (Op. 49, No. 4.) In 1910, Australian pianist and composer Percy Grainger arranged the Wiegenlied as one of his "Free Settings of Favorite Melodies" for solo piano.
