My grandfather sailed on one of Titanic's sister ships the Olympic. The Olympic was built first, the Titanic second and the third ship to be built was supposed to be called the "Gigantic" but after the Titanic disaster the "Gigantic" was renamed the "Britannic" to tone down the grandiose name a bit. The Titanic was virtually identical to the Olympic but the Titanic had extra suites added to its deck where lifeboats were on its sister ship Olympic making Titanic a heavier ship tonnage-wise. Less lifeboats on deck gave more room to add first-class suites-hindsight is 20/20 as they say. The Britannic was converted to a hospital ship in World War I and sank in 1914 in much shallower water than Titanic. The Britannic either hit a German mine or was hit by a German torpedo and went down very quickly due to many of the port windows being opened on the ship for ventilation for war wounded-water poured in the open port windows as it sank. A nurse on the Britannic first sailed on the Olympic, then sailed on Titanic surviving its sinking-THEN sailed on Britannic and survived the torpedoing and sinking of Britannic!
