Today, Pope Leo XIV has declared Cardinal John Henry Newman (1801–1890), a converted Anglican, a Doctor of the Church and co-patron of Catholic education alongside Thomas Aquinas. The announcement was made during a ceremony in St. Peter’s Square. It was attended by delegations from the UK, including Anglican laymen. Pope Leo XIV said: "I am very pleased to welcome the official delegation of the Church of England, led by His Grace Stephen Cottrell, Archbishop of York."
