The Corapi case: what was said, and what wasn’t

The Corapi case: what was said, and what wasn’t

July 8, 2011

There’s been a lot of back-and-forth over the last several hours about John Corapi’s response yesterday to the SOLT statement of 5 July, summarizing the order’s findings and directing him, under obedience, to return to the order and live in community.

It might be useful for all who are interested to see what exactly was said — and what wasn’t.

Below is a brief summary, based purely on what is contained in the SOLT press release and in John Corapi’s response.

What the SOLT said:
He did have sexual relations and years of cohabitation (in California and Montana) with a woman known to him, when the relationship began, as a prostitute;
What Corapi said:
I have never had any promiscuous or even inappropriate relations with her. Never.
N.B. He does not make clear who the “her” is, and does not directly address the issue of cohabitation. The phrasing “promiscuous or even inappropriate” is sufficiently vague as to be open to interpretation.
😲
-----------------------------------------------------------------

What the SOLT said:
He repeatedly abused alcohol and drugs.
What Corapi said:
Nothing.
😲
----------------------------------------------------------------

What the SOLT said:
He has recently engaged in sexting activity with one or more women in Montana…
What Corapi said:
Nothing.
😲
-----------------------------------------------------------------

What the SOLT said:
He holds legal title to over $1 million in real estate, numerous luxury vehicles, motorcycles, an ATV, a boat dock, and several motor boats, which is a serious violation of his promise of poverty as a perpetually professed member of the Society.
What Corapi said:
At every step of the way, through the entire past twenty years, the Society of Our Lady’s leadership knew of my financial independence. As Fr. Flanagan encouraged, I have supported SOLT and myself from ‘day-one.‘ I have never relied on the Society for shelter, clothing, transportation, medical care, or legal counsel and instead, using my history of success in business, set up my mission as any savvy business man would, meanwhile continuing to support the Society and many other Catholic Charities.
N.B. He does not deny that he holds the property described by SOLT and, in fact, strongly implies that this was fine with his superiors since he was “a savvy business man.”
😲
--------------------------------------------------------------

What the SOLT said:
SOLT has …directed Fr. John Corapi, under obedience, to return home to the Society’s regional office and take up residence there. It has also ordered him, again under obedience, to dismiss the lawsuit he has filed against his accuser.
What Corapi said:
As I have indicated from the beginning of all this, I am not extinguished! If I were to commit to the suggestion of the Society, then I would essentially crawl under a rock and wait to die.
N.B. He considers the SOLT’s order “under obedience” to be a “suggestion.” This, ironically, from a man who has famously stated, “Vatican II did not turn the 10 Commandments into the 10 Suggestions.”
😲
-----------------------------------------------------------------

Finally: the SOLT in its release noted that Corapi had filed suit against his “principal accuser” – hinting that there may be more than one – and also noted in broad outline some of the accusations made against him, i.e. “Fr. Corapi’s sexual activity with adult women, abuse of alcohol and drugs, improper sacramental practices, violation of his promise of poverty, and other wrongdoing.” The “improper sacramental practices” goes unaddressed in the SOLT’s summary of findings, and Corapi doesn’t mention that charge, either.

Disclosing the alledged faults committed by Father Corapi without necessity is a sin.

For if he is really guilty of some secret sin, still he has not lost the good opinion of others, and of this he is robbed when others publish his alledged misconduct.

Tell that to Fr. Sheehan [Director of Solt] who issued today's press release and to EWTN who fired Fr. Corapi The Sheep Dog for his alleged misconduct. In fact, why don't you tell Fr. Sheehan. Tell him that he should never have published this account because it may jeopardize the "good opinion of others" toward the Sheep Dog. Do that Gregory and let us know how far you get.
----------------------------------------------
If you had any common sense, you would relaize that I am doing Catholics a service by posting this story. I direct your attention to the following line in today's press release:

Catholics should understand that SOLT does not consider Father John Corapi as fit for ministry.

Despite what you think, I'd say that is very important, Gregory. If I was stupid enought to have bought any of his tapes, books or DVDs, I'd throw them out immediately. In fact, I'd burn them based on the directive from SOLT. How many did you buy, Gregory?

😀 😀 😀
---------------------------------
This sin, the lessening of Father Corapi’s reputation, is an act of injustice towards him.

Posting a news story that was released by his very own Director is no sin. However, if naiveté were a sin, you would be hell bound for sure, Gregory. As it is, you will merely continue to blunder through life firmly entrenched in simplemindedness.

You still don't get it.
But you do? LOL
You are quote mongering, this time verbatim, and seemingly proud of it.
It's a legitamate update to a news story directly related to the Catholic faith. I know you're into hero worship, but too bad for you.
It's strange to see this, over and again, and it in no way reflects well on you.

Actually, it doesn't reflect well on your hero, the Black SheepDog, and that's why your complaining. It must be devastating to discover that one of your heroes may have “feet of clay”?

What we all know is that Father Corapi is Catholic. You, I have my doubts about.
Since your judgment is obviously flawed (trusting more in the SheepDog than the pronouncements of Fr. Sheehan, the Director of SOLT), I don't care what you have "doubts about."

Benny opines:
Whenever I see somebody delighting in somebody else's misery, piling on, taking his daily dose of pleasure vicariously in the suffering of others, I am reminded why the justice of man is nothing before the justice of God, and I think of John's words, and also of Christ's words, where He Himself said he came to save sinners.

You're making a lot of assumptions there, Benny.

I've quoted directly from a SOLT press release dated July5, 2011. You've already expressed doubt in what Fr. Sheehan has previously said so I shouldn't be surprised that you find fault with the facts contained in the most recent press release.

I have deliberately avoided expressing my personal thoughts on Fr. Carapi
the Black SheepDog. However, I am amused by his fans and their cult like alligence to a man/dog who, at the very least, is in deep doo-doo.

Press Release Concerning Fr John Corapi from SOLT Regional Priest Servant

July 5, 2011

A woman, well known to Fr. John Corapi, mailed SOLT a signed letter detailing allegations of Fr. Corapi's sexual activity with adult women, abuse of alcohol and drugs, improper sacramental practices, violation of his promise of poverty, and other wrongdoing.

After receiving the allegation, SOLT formed a three person fact-finding team to ensure that it handled this matter in accordance with canonical norms. The team included a priest-canonist, a psychiatrist, and a lawyer. Two were members of religious orders, and one was a lay Catholic. Two were men, and one was a woman. All three have national reputations and substantial experience in ecclesiastical processes related to priest disciplinary issues.

As the Society was engaging this team, Fr. Corapi filed a civil lawsuit against his principal accuser. He contended that she had defamed him and breached her contract. The contract, according to Corapi's lawsuit, contained a provision binding the woman to silence about him. He offered the woman $100,000 to enter this agreement.

SOLT's fact-finding team subsequently learned that Fr. Corapi may have negotiated contracts with other key witnesses that precluded them from speaking with SOLT's fact-finding team. Many of these witnesses likely had key information about the accusations being investigated and declined to answer questions and provide documents.

SOLT’s fact-finding team has acquired information from Father Corapi’s emails, various witnesses and public sources that, together, state that, during his years of public ministry:

SOLT has contemporaneously, with the issuance of this press release, directed Father John Corapi, under obedience, to return home to the society’s regional office and take up residence there. It has also ordered him, again under obedience, to dismiss the lawsuit he has filed against his accuser.

SOLT’s prior direction to Father John Corapi not to engage in any preaching or teaching, the celebration of the sacraments or other public ministry continues. Catholics should understand that SOLT does not consider Father John Corapi as fit for ministry.

To me, the most astounding thing about the lawsuit [The B.S.'s lawsuit] is the lurid details Corapi decides to include, details that, while showing she [the alleged victim] is not exactly a saint, do not do him any favors either. For example, the brief argues that "[her] Letter contained numerous false, malicious and unprivileged statements about Corapi including...Corapi met [her] when she was sent to meet him by an escort service whom Corapi had contacted; Corapi was a regular drug purchaser and user who...did drugs with [her] and...three of her sisters; Corapi engaged in sexual acts and sexual intercourse with [her and] ... one of [her] sisters; Corapi punched [her] in the face; and Corapi currently has a 'new mistress.'" Call me naive, but would a woman make up a bunch of not only embarrassing but illegal details such as doing drugs and being involved in an escort service; activities for which she herself could be jailed, if the rest of the story wasn't true as well? Of course, it could be that Corapi just happened to be driving through the bad part of town when he spied the sad sisters and, out of the goodness of his heart, hired one and left a care package of cash and his tapes on the Catechism for the others. Later, he reluctantly had to let the lead sister go from his employment after he finds her repeatedly raiding the liquor cabinet, which he kept only for the benefit of his many generous Catholic benefactors.

"In his statement, Warsaw [EWTN's President] said that much of that criticism has been “shrill and uncharitable.” He said that many people have threatened to withhold donations and have made personal remarks attacking the network’s employees."
