Filming with low light can be an effective video technique but one must be careful not to leave the main subject in shadows.
Regarding your gestures: one must be careful when pointing to the audience during a lecture. Politicians are very skilled at avoiding harsh types of gestures so when they need to emphasize a point and directly address their audience, they do so with either a gently closed fist with the thumb placed gently on top of the fist or with an open hand.
