Blessed Savina Petrilli
Siena, August 29, 1851 – April 18, 1923

Roman Martyrology: In Siena, Blessed Sabina Petrilli, virgin, who founded the Congregation of the Sisters of St. Catherine of Siena to meet the needs of girls in need and the poor.
Savina Petrilli was born in Siena on August 29, 1851, the second daughter of Celso and Matilde Venturini. At age 15, she was enrolled in the Congregation of the Daughters of Mary and was elected president. Two years later, she issed her first vow of virginity for a year. In 1869 she was received by Pope Pius IX, who urged her to walk in the footsteps of St. Catherine. On August 15, 1873 in the chapel of the family home, with five others, she issued her vows of chastity, poverty and obedience, in the presence of her confessor and with the consent of Archbishop Mgr. Enrico Bindi, who granted permission to begin work for the benefit of the poor.
The new small religious family is called the “Congregation of the Poor Sisters of St. Catherine of Siena.” In 1881 the first foundation in Onano (Viterbo) was founded and in 1903 the first mission in Belém (Brazil). The Constitutions of the Congregation, which is of pontifical right, was finally approved on June 17, 1906.
Subsequently, the Mother Savina vowed not to deny anything voluntarily to the Lord, vowed perfect obedience to the spiritual director, vowed not to complain deliberately about external and internal afflictions, and vowed to completely abandon herself to the will of the Father. On April 18, 1923 at 17.20 Mother Savina left the earth to finally enter into God’s possession.
Besides the 25 houses in Italy, the congregation has works in Brazil, Argentina, India, the United States, the Philippines, in Paraguay. The charism Savina transmitted from mother to her sisters is to radically live the priesthood of Christ in adoration and totally disposed to the will of the Father all’immolazione up, making life as the center of the Eucharist; keep the mission of Christ that announces the Father in a service of evangelization and promotion to the brothers, especially the poor. For the poor Mother Savina is the sacrament of Christ and may be regarded as a mystery of faith, as the Eucharist. So the congregation is to serve the poor, of all those who suffer and are oppressed.
John Paul II proclaimed her blessed in the Piazza of Saint Peter April 24, 1988.
