Two Roman Catholic priests have been released by Belarus following diplomatic outreach from the Vatican. President Alexander Lukashenko pardoned Rev Henrykh Akalatovich, who had been convicted to an 11-year sentence for "treason", and Rev Andrzej Yukhnevich, who was convicted to 13 years earlier this year on charges he denied. According to the human rights group Viasna, both priests had long faced pressure from the authorities. Akalatovich was arrested shortly after undergoing cancer surgery, while Yukhnevich had previously been detained for symbolic acts such as displaying a Ukrainian flag. The state agency Belta described the release as a 'gesture of mercy' tied to intensified contacts with the Vatican. The Catholic Church in Belarus said the move followed last month's visit by Cardinal Claudio Gugerotti, who was sent by Pope Leo XIV.

He admitted that his guidelines for the Church "correspond to the perspectives that emerged during the synodal journey of the Church in Italy". However, the Italian Synod accepted homosexuality and female deacons in October. Pope Leo XIV commented: "It is now up to you, bishops, to outline the pastoral guidelines for the coming years."
