1119 A.D. Christmas Day.
Nine men with Hugh of Payens as their leader took vows of poverty, chastisy, and obedience to become the “Paupere Commilitones Christi” or The Poor Fellow Soldiers of Christ.
Their sworn duty was to protect the pilgrims traveling to Jerusalem from the many bands of brigands that often waylayed them.
The men who became the first Knights Templar had the Order begin in The Church Of The Holy Sepulchre located on the hill of Golgotha. The very place where Jesus Christ was crucified.
They were given the al-Aqsa mosque as a headquarters which is believed to have been built on the site of Solomon’s Temple.
It was called the Tempus Solomani and they were known as The Templars from that time forward.
