Paying respect to Chiara Lubich.

Over the weekend, thousands of people visited the chapel where the body of Chiara Lubich has been laid to rest in Rocca di Papa, a few kilometers from Rome, to pay their last respects to the founder of the Focolare movement. Oreste Basso, co-president of this movement, describes these moments.

"Chiara is already in Paradise and we are still here. She opened the way so that we may follow."

One of those who accompanied Chiara in her final hours recounts the experience.

"Two days before coming home, she said that she intensely felt Mary's presence; Chiara was very peaceful and imparted peace to all those who surrounded her…"

"A multitude went to visit her. I kissed her hand, one thanked her, and another said 'Look, soon you will be with the Father forever'. And she answered 'yes'. For, even though she was very ill, she was still very alert. And at two, she gently past away."

The funeral will be on Tuesday at the Basilica of Saint Paul Outside the Walls and will be presided over by Cardinal Tarcisio Bertone, the Secretary of State. Chiara Lubich will be buried in Rocca di Papa next to Igino Giordani, the co-founder of the Focolare movement whose beatification process has already begun.
