Fined For Saying the Truth

Poland

"If Catholics will be sentenced for calling abortion by its proper name – murder -, then we will get into great difficulties" - said the General Secretary of the Polish Episcopate, Bishop Stanislaw Budzik. A Polish Court has assigned to Alice Tysiąc 11’000 dollars compensation. The sum of money must be paid by the diocesan magazine of the archdiocese of Katowice, „Gość Niedzielny”. An article published in the magazine suggested that Mrs Tysiąc tried to commit murder by aiming at removing the pregnancy for fear of worsening her eyesight. "I dear to say that this sentence evokes the spirit of the past, when for the words of truth one had to pay with jail - commented Cardinal Dziwisz of Krakow. "This sentence is a manifestation of the civilization of death," added the Metropolitan of Katowice Archbishop Damian Zimoń.

Assisted Suicide Can be Imposed on Individuals

Canada

The president of the Canadian Conference of Catholic Bishops is urging members of the Parliament not to legalize euthanasia and assisted suicide and to avoid ambiguous language in discussing the issue. “It is hard to see how any legislation legalizing euthanasia and assisted suicide would protect the most vulnerable in our society, writes terminally ill Archbishop James Weisgerber of Winnipeg. There is also the well-founded fear that euthanasia and assisted suicide can be imposed on individuals as a way to save costs and lessen demands on care-givers. Inevitably, the result would be a society even more fragmented, with its members living in greater isolation and anxiety.

Directly From the mouth of the Pope

Germany

Pope Benedict XVI wishes that the Priestly Fraternity of St. Peter be entrusted, beyond the celebration of Holy Mass in the Extraordinary Form, at as many places as possible, with the full pastoral care. This was reported by Fr John Berg, Superior General of the Priestly Fraternity of St. Peter, at the Annual Meeting of the organization Pro Missa Tridentina, which was held on Wednesday in the German city Wiesbaden. On 6 July, Fr. Berg had a private audience with the Pope, during which he was able to speak for fifteen minutes with The Holy Father at his desk in the papal library.

Back in His Tomb

Italy

Almost nine million pilgrims prayed during the seventeen months of exposure to public view of the rudiments of St. Padre Pio in his glass sarcophagus. Among them was Pope Benedict XVI, who visited San Giovanni Rotondo, on June 21st. Yesterday morning, in the presence of the Capuchin Brothers and the ordinary of the Archdiocese Archbishop Michele Castoro, the remains of Padre Pio's coffin were transferred from the sarcophagus to be placed in the crypt of Our Lady of Grace.
