"The Word is very near to you, it is in your mouth and in your heart for your observance.’" – Deut 30:14, which is part of today's First Reading at Mass. This stone carving from Sant'Apollinare in Classe is a popular early Christian image. The birds, drinking from the chalice, are an image of Christian souls being fed by Christ the Word made Flesh in the Holy Eucharist.
