She met the Pope not the abortionist: Pope Francis has personally requested the presence of a sick toddler at yesterday’s closing mass for World Youth Day in Rio de Janeiro. The girl suffers from anencephaly, a condition in which she was born without a large part of her brain. The girl was brought up to the altar during the Offertory procession. Most children affected by anencephaly do not survive this condition and are often brutally aborted before the pregnancy comes to term. The Pope got to meet the girl when her parents presented her to him as he was leaving the Cathedral in Rio on Saturday.

Heaven help us: Fr Ray Blake did not approve of the bishops who during the World Youth Day in Rio de Janeiro were rehearsing for some kind of group dance. Fr Blake writes on his blog: „I thought I had seen the ridiculous side of the Church but here is the pits. There is nothing worst than mutton pretending to be lamb. If this is what these men think is going to inspire "the youth", heaven help us.“

World's oldest cardinal dead: The world's oldest cardinal, Ersilio Tonini, died early Sunday in a retirement home in Ravenna where he was living for many years. Tonini was a former archbishop of Ravenna and, until his death, a very public figure in Italy. He celebrated his last birthday on July 20th. The late cardinal was ordained a priest in 1937. As a pastor, he claims to have spent three to four hours every day hearing confessions.

A priest among the victims: On Saturday, in Campo de Criptana, the Bishop of Ciudad Real, Spain officiated at the funeral of Fr Jose Maria Romeral, the vicar of the church of Santa Teresa de Colmenar Viejo in Madrid and a native of Campo de Criptana. Father Romeral died in the terrible train accident in Santiago de Compostela. Being on vacation, Father planned to spend a few days with a friend when he was killed.
