98-Years-Old: Among the new cardinals named by Pope Francis on Sunday is 98 year-old archbishop Loris Capovilla. For ten years he was the private secretary of John XXIII, the pope who opened the Second Vatican Council. Today, Capovilla lives in Sotto il Monte, the town where John XXIII originated from.

Not Married: On Sunday Pope Francis baptized 32 children in the Sistine Chapel. Among the children was Giulia who is slightly over six months old. Her parents are two military employees from Southern Italy who are on duty in Tuscany. They were not married within the Church but live in a civil union.

Bankrupt: The German bishops’ notorious pornography publisher Weltbild is bankrupt. It started insolvency proceedings in an Augsburg court last Friday. The move endangers over 6,000 jobs. The owners of Weltbild include 12 Catholic dioceses and the military ordinaritate. This is the third huge scandal involving the German bishops in less than 12 months after their introduction of the morning-after pill in Catholic hospitals and their de facto support for the public defamation of Limburg bishop Peter Tebartz van Elst.

Divided Country: Some 50 new Catholic churches, mainly in the Eastern region of Moravia, have been built in the Czech Republic since the 1989 collapse of the communist regime. Ten are being planned or under construction. In Bohemia, the western part of the country with the capital city of Prague, very few new churches have appeared in the past two decades.
