The Pope blesses the statue of Saint John Leonardi.

Before arriving in St Peter's Square, the Pope blessed the monumental statue depicting St. John Leonardi, founder of the Congregation of the Clerics Regular of the Mother of God, proclaimed in 2006 as patron of pharmacists. The sculpture, 5 meters, 40 centimeters high and weighing 27 tons, is the work of artist Paul Cavallo and was placed in a niche outside the Basilica. Thus the 70th anniversary of the canonization of the Saint was celebrated, which took place April 17, 1938 by Pius XI. The blessing of the statue is a prelude to the jubilee celebrations of the Congregation for the fourth centenary of the death of the Saint, which will begin in the Italian city of Lucca next October
