Bishop Walter Mixa of Augsburg Has Offered His Resignation

Germany

An infamous media-row against German bishop Walter Mixa of Augsburg has been successful. For weeks the bishop was randomly accused of unsubstantiated allegations like brutally beating children with a stick or embezzling funds of his former parish. Now, he seems to have broken down amidst pressure from the media and from German bishops. Mixa was a strong defender of Catholic orthodoxy. He attracted many seminarians to his diocese.

British Bishop Warns of Liberal Democrat Party

UK

Bishop Malcolm McMahon of Nottingham is warning Catholics that a victory by the Liberal Democrats in the May 6 general election could threaten the existence of Catholic schools. The party has pledged to make it illegal for religious schools to select students on the basis of their faith. “Catholics should give it very serious consideration before they vote Liberal Democrat,” said Bishop McMahon. “Our position is that every person should have the right to bring up their children according to their consciences.”

Against the Self-Destruction of Society

Vatican

In an article published in L’Osservatore Romano, French historian and former communist, Alain Besançon, offered an analysis of the first five years of Benedict XVI’s pontificate. He noted that the media campaign against the Holy Father and the Church reveals a hatred for Christianity, and that the Pope is confronting the “self-destruction” of society, nature and reason.

Pope Speaks About Abuses

Vatican

Yesterday at the weekly general audience, Pope Benedict spoke publicly for the first time on fighting clerical sex abuse within the Church. The Holy Father told the crowd in St. Peter's Square about how he gave “assurances of the Church's action” at a meeting with abuse victims in Malta, to do everything possible to investigate allegations of sexual abuse, bring perpetrators to justice and implement effective measures for the protection of young people.

An Advise for Seminarians

Internet

If you’re a seminarian or prospective seminarian who wishes to implement the liturgical renewal inspired by Pope Benedict XVI, it’s best to keep fairly quiet about it, Damian Thomson suggests in his blog. Things aren’t as bad as they were a few years ago, when any seminarian caught reading Ratzinger would be tested for “psychological immaturity” by a feminist, Thompson continues. He adds: The worship in certain seminaries has moved on from the 1960s to the 1980s and staff have reluctantly accepted that tomorrow’s priests will be more conservative than they are (not difficult, in truth). But it’s still not safe to express too much enthusiasm for the Extraordinary Form, lest you identify yourself with fringe Catholics like, um, the Pope.

It's good that a bishop tries to wake up the Catholics. I hope, they will hear.
