Tough Archbishop

Cyprus

Archbishop Chrysostomos II, the head of the Orthodox Church of Cyprus, is warning that he will discipline any bishop who boycotts the June 4 welcoming ceremony for Pope Benedict XVI. Viewing the Pontiff as a “heretic,” five Cypriot bishops have threatened to boycott the ceremony. They now risk expulsion from the Church’s holy synod for a year. The nation of 800,000 is 78% Orthodox, 18% Muslim, and 2% Catholic.

Mary's Charity is not Limited to Concrete Assistance

Vatican

"Today's men and women have a profound longing" for Jesus, Pope Benedict XVI told participants in an annual procession through the Vatican grounds on May 31. The traditional procession, marking the feast of the Visitation, passed through the Vatican gardens, beginning at the church of St. Stephen and ending at the Lourdes grotto. The faithful recited the Rosary as they walked. The Pope addressed the group at the conclusion of the evening procession. "It should be noted that Mary's charity is not limited to concrete assistance but achieves its highest form in bestowing Jesus himself, in making him present," the Pope said.

Horror Court Ruling

Korea

Korean Church leaders have reacted with horror to a court ruling that frozen embryos are "not human." The court ruling allows for the routine destruction of human embryos in research and artificial fertilization procedures. "It is a ruling that is contrary to human life and to science itself," Cardinal Nicholas Cheong of Seoul told the Fides news service. With popular opinion generally indifferent, the cardinal said that Christians would carry the obligation to raise consciousness about the issue.

Former Father Cutié Ordained an Episcopalian

USA

Alberto Cutié, the Miami archdiocesan priest whose Catholic media outreach ended with the publication of compromising photographs with a woman who is now his wife, was ordained in the Episcopal Church on May 29. “As an Episcopalian, he's speaking freely about his support of openly gay clergy, of birth control, and, when a woman's life is in danger, even abortion,” the Miami Herald reported.
