Abuses: One Has To Look Beyond the Church

Ireland

In the June editorial of the Irish Redemptorist magazine, Reality, Fr Gerry Moloney says, “A sense of balance and perspective” is needed in relation to the Church and child protection. He underlines that “This is not to take the heat off the Church, or to deny that it still has many issues to address.” Rather, writes Fr Moloney, “It is simply to acknowledge that if as a society we are serious about safeguarding children we need to look beyond the failures of the Church to all areas where abuse occurs, and demand that strong action be taken.”

Bishop Mixa of Augsburg, Germany, is Fighting

Germany

Retired Bishop Walter Mixa of Augsburg has told a German newspaper that he may ask Pope Benedict in a July audience to rescind his resignation. The resignation was accepted on May 8 amid unsubstantiated allegations of child abuse and financial improprieties. Mixa says, he was forced under pressure akin to “the fires of Purgatory” to retire. He criticized Archbishop Robert Zollitsch of Freiburg, Archbishop Reinhard Marx of Munich, and Augsburg Auxiliary Bishop Anton Losinger for calling for that step. He also revealed that three days after he signed a pre-written resignation letter, he sent Pope Benedict a letter revoking his resignation. The bishop attributed the opposition he faced to his conservatism and added that the physical punishment of children that he admitted was legal in the 1970s.

Ecumenical Patriarchate Wins Court Case Against Turkey

EU – Turkey

The European Court of Human Rights has ruled in favor of the Ecumenical Patriarchate of Contantinople in a case against the Turkish government. The court in Strasbourg ruled that Turkey must return a building that once housed an Orthodox orphanage. More important, the court recognized the Ecumenical Patriarchate as a legal entity with the right to own property. The Turkish government has never recognized the patriarchate, treating the Orthodox body as a local religious community with no national or international status.

Undermining People’s Lives

Gaza

The pastor of the only Catholic church in the Gaza Strip says that the effect of an Israel blockade is to “undermine people’s lives.” Father Manuel Musallam said that the blockade has had a debilitating effect on innocent civilians, stunting trade and bringing the local economy to a virtual standstill. “There are no differences between Christians and Muslims because we all suffer the same way,” he said.
