Protestant Acceptance of Homosexuality Undermines Ecumenism

Russia

The acceptance of homosexuality by some Protestant communities undermines ecumenism, Patriarch Kirill of Moscow and All Russia said during a meeting with the general secretary of the World Council of Churches on June 28. “Kirill expressed a serious concern about some difficulties faced by ecumenical dialogue in view of what he labeled as new positions of some Protestant churches on important moral issues, including the understanding of homosexuality,” a press release of the World Council of Churches noted.

Mexican Church Opposes Homosexual Adoptions

Mexico

Even if Mexico’s courts allow adoption by homosexual couples, the Catholic Church will continue to condemn the practice as immoral, a spokesman for the Mexico City archdiocese has stated. He said that he expected the country’s top court to uphold a new law allowing homosexuals to adopt children. “We are respectful,” he said, “although we do not agree on the moral point of view.” He said that the Church will endeavor to change public opinion on the question. “Our work is one of evangelization,” he said.

Negative Attitudes is the Biggest Problem

Vatican

Yesterday during the Mass in Saint Peter’s Basilica the Holy Father asserted that the “greatest danger” to the Church is not external persecution, but the “negative attitudes” of the world that can pollute and “infect the Christian community” from within. The Pope made his remarks as he bestowed the pallium—the liturgical vestment emblematic of union with the Pope—upon the 38 new metropolitan archbishops who took their posts this year.

Belgian Foreign Minister Defends Aggressive Police Raid

Belgium

Belgian Foreign Minister Steven Vanackere defended an aggressive police raid of a bishops’ meeting during an investigation of the clerical abuse scandal. The Vatican and the Belgian bishops have strongly protested two aspects of the search: the violation of the tombs of two deceased archbishops and the seizure of confidential files from the Church-authorized investigating commission. Vanackere has studied in a College of the Carmelite Friars and was a student at Catholic University of Leuven. He belongs to the Christian Democat Party.
