St Oswald.
3 August is the feast of the king and martyr, St Oswald. He was a 7th-century king of Northumbria who converted to the Christian Faith, and who helped St Aidan establish his See at Lindisfarne. St Bede the Venerable writes about Oswald's saintly life, and extols him as a virtuous king. It was in conflict with the pagan Mercians under Penda that he died at the Battle of Maserfield, and his body was dismembered. Oswald's head was eventually interred in Durham Cathedral together with the remains of St Cuthbert of Lindisfarne. For this reason, the latter is often depicted holding St Oswald's head! This beautiful window of today's saint, c.1934-5, is by A. K. Nicholson, and it is part of a set in the Sacrament chapel of Newcastle Cathedral.
