Cardinal: What is not Negotiable

Austria

Last Saturday, Vienna Cardinal Christoph Schoenborn spoke with the regional German newspaper Passauer Neue Presse. In the interview he also mentioned the Priestly Society of Saint Pius X. The Pope advocates the unity of the Church – the Cardinal said. He described the Society of Saint Pius X as - quote: "group of Catholics who have separated themselves from the Church." The cardinal stressed that the Vatican will ignore the past deeds and statements of the Traditionalists. But he predicted that the upcoming negotiations will make very clear what the Holy See will not negotiate about. As examples Schoenborn mentioned the attitude toward Jews and other religions and confessions.

Preparations Have Started

Spain

The next World Youth Day will take place in 2011 in Madrid. The organizers expect some two million young people, half of them from Spain and the rest from other countries – according to Cardinal Antonio María Rouco Varela, archbishop of Madrid, in an interview with Spanish daily ABC. The interview marked yesterday’s beginning of the preparations for the meeting. With yesterday’s vigil in the Cathedral in Madrid begins the pilgrimage of The Cross of the World’ Youth Days. It was given to the Archdiocese of Madrid on last year’s Palm Sunday. The Cross will visit all the parishes of the Archdiocese, before moving to the suffragan dioceses of Alcalá and Getafe. Later it will visit every diocese of Spain.

Communion within a few Month?

Russia

Archbishop Paolo Pezzi of Moscow has given a remarkably upbeat assessment of relations with the Orthodox Church. In an interview yesterday in Italy’s Corriere della Sera newspaper, the archbishop said that the miracle of reunification “is possible, indeed it has never been so close.” He added that Catholic-Orthodox reunification “could happen soon, within a few months.” “There are no formal obstacles”, he added: “Everything depends on a real desire for communion.” According to Pezzi on the part of the Catholic Church “the desire is very much alive.” On matters of doctrine, the two Churches are essentially in agreement. “There remains the question of papal primacy,” Archbishop Pezzi acknowledged, “and this will be a concern at the next meeting of the Catholic-Orthodox Commission. But to me, it doesn’t seem impossible to reach an agreement.”

Morricone Lauds the Pope

Italy
The famous Italian composer Ennio Morricone has lauded Pope Benedict’s attempts to promote Gregorian chant in the sacred liturgy. Morricone has written scores for more than 500 films, including The Mission and The Untouchables. “Today the Church has made a big mistake, turning the clock back 500 years with guitars and popular songs,” Morricone stated in an interview to Zenit: “I don't like it at all. Gregorian chant is a vital and important tradition of the Church and to waste this by having kids mix religious words with profane, Western songs is hugely grave.” Pope Benedict-- whom Morricone calls “a very high-minded Pope, a man of great culture and of great strength”-- “is doing well to correct it,” he added.
