Benedict XVI: A Pilgrim of Peace in Jordan.

Religious freedom is a fundamental human right; violence and conflict between the western and Muslim worlds are not inevitable. This was Benedict XVI’s opening message upon arrival in Amman, Jordan, the first stage of his pilgrimage to the Holy Land.

In his speech, Benedict XVI commended the Kingdom of Jordan for its commitment in promoting peace and inter-religious dialogue. He also appreciated its efforts to find a just solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, welcoming refugees from neighboring Iraq and seeking to curb extremism.

The opportunity that the Catholic community in Jordan enjoys to build public places of worship is a sign of the country’s respect for religion, and in the name of Catholics, the Pope said, I wish to express how greatly this openness is appreciated.
