Cardinal Castrillon Hoyos Backs Away

USA

Cardinal Dario Castrillon Hoyos, the former prefect of the Congregation for Clergy, has backed away from plans to preside at a Pontifical Mass at the National Shrine in Washington, DC. Sex-abuse victims had protested the scheduled appearance by the Colombian prelate, after the publication of a 2001 letter in which Cardinal Castrillon allegedly praised a French bishop for withholding evidence of a priest's sexual abuse. The Paulus Institute, which is sponsoring the traditional liturgy, said that another bishop would be asked to celebrate the April 24 liturgical celebration. This will be the first public celebration of the traditional Latin Mass in the National Shrine in almost 50 years.

A Mean-Spirited Condemnation of an Old Friend

USA

George Weigel, an American author, takes Father Hans Küng to task for his vituperative personal attack on Pope Benedict XVI, calling it "mean-spirited condemnation of an old friend." Weigel notes that Küng "single-handedly invented a new global personality-type-- the dissident theologian as international media star." However, he argues, the dissident's timing is poor: “…you relentlessly pursue your fifty-year quest for a liberal Protestant Catholicism, at precisely the moment when the liberal Protestant project is collapsing from its inherent theological incoherence.”

More than Two Sections

Internet

It's commonly been taught that the Novus Ordo is comprised of two sections: the Liturgy of the Word and the Liturgy of the Eucharist. But depending on where you go to Mass, there are more sections. The blog Acts of the Apostasy has defined some of these sections. One is the Liturgy of the Bulletin - prior to the final blessing or at the beginning of Mass. Another is the Liturgy of the Exodus during "family Masses", where the children are encouraged to leave their families before the first reading to go listen to dumbed-down versions of the readings and Gospel. Next is the Liturgy of the Ours when congregants are asked to blurt out any personal intentions. Then comes the Liturgy of hugs for the "Kiss of Peace". It can last longer than the homily. Finally the Liturgy of Dine and Dash when a percentage of the congregation leaves immediately after receiving Holy Communion. The blog hopes that this synopsis will provide all with a deeper appreciation for the hard work of creative liturgists with the goal of increasing active participation. It concludes: “Never have so few done so much to provide so little.”
