A Fatal Earthquake: U.S. journalist John Thavis commented on the relatio read yesterday at the Synod of Bishops and called it – quote – “a pastoral earthquake, the ‘big one’ that hit after months of smaller tremors.” The relatio read aloud in the synod hall calls for the Church to build on alleged “positive values” in unions that the Church and the Gospel considers gravely sinful, including cohabitating couples, divorce and second marriage and even the sin of Sodom.
This Is Not Mercy: According to Thavis the document reflects Pope Francis' desire to adopt a – quote – “more merciful pastoral approach” on marriage and family issues. This formulation implies that the Popes until Francis, Catholic doctrine and even the Gospel and Jesus Christ were not sufficiently merciful. It is not clear why Pope Francis does not extend his kind of mercy to other grave sins like pedophilia.
Self-Deception: The relatio claimed that a “new dimension of today’s family pastoral consists of accepting the reality of civil marriage and also cohabitation.” But this is a self-deception of the Fathers of the Synod. What they call “new dimension” is nothing but the old sin of which Christ says in John 8: “Go, and from now on sin no more.”
Is This the New Springtime of the Church? Gloria.tv believes that the relatio is another fatal sign of the grave crises in which the Church finds itself at this moment. Being weak and ambiguous on such crucial topics will lead to a further degradation of the Family and a further capitulation of the Church in front of the world. Being soft on this topic will not bring about the much desired new springtime of the Church but the contrary.
The relatio was also deeply dishonest. It cited situations of couples who choose to live together without marriage for economic or cultural reasons, or those in Africa who enter into traditional marriages in “stages”. But no African bishop has asked the Church to water down Church doctrine because of this. It is the decadent Western world that has succeeded in importing its decadence into a crowd of confused bishops who have lost the contact to the Gospel.
