Accord to Repair the Church of The Nativity in Bethlehem

Palestine

Last week the Palestinian Authority and Christian leaders signed an accord to repair the Church of the Nativity in Bethlehem on the traditional site of Jesus's birth. The one-million-dollar project, to be carried out by an international consortium supervised by Italian renovations expert Remigio Rossi, will fix leaks in the roof that could otherwise threaten the interior of the building. It will be the first such maintenance project to be carried out on the roof in 200 years. The Church is shared by the Catholic, Greek Orthodox and Armenian Orthodox denominations.

Two Reasons Why Christians Convert to Islam

Egypt

In an interview with Aid to the Church in Need Patriarch Antonius Naguib, the head of the Coptic Catholic Church said that there are two principal reasons why Christians convert to Islam: One is based on marriage. The easiest way to get out of a marriage, for a Christian whether its the man or the woman, is to become Muslim - for them it is easy to divorce and have the benefit of full rights against the other partner or spouse and full custody of the children. The second reason is the weakness in one's faith. This is due to the lack of good formation in one's faith. The Coptic Catholic Church has an estimated 166,000 members.

No Explosions or Nudity

Canada

Actor and director of the Film “The Way”, Emilio Estevez reluctantly has gone to Spain to tell a story about how faith, hope and walking are all part of the American way of overcoming hard times. The movie has no nudity. There are no explosions. There are no car chases, said Estevez. "It's about this community of broken souls. And there's a ton of humor in it." The story follows four characters walking the Camino de Santiago de Compostela, or the Way of St. James, through Spain. "Americans are searching for something. The film serves as the ultimate metaphor for life," said Estevez. The movie premieres Sept. 10 at the Toronto International Film Festival.

Pope Honors Leo XIII.

Vatican

Yesterday Pope Benedict XVI celebrated the Eucharist with 5,000 people in the center of the small mountain town of Carpineto Romano, the birthplace of Pope Leo XIII. The pastoral visit came within a jubilee celebration to mark the 200th anniversary of Leo XIII's birth. During his homily, Benedict XVI reflected on two aspects of the late Pope's life. The first element was the faith and devotion of the 19th and 20th century Pope. The second aspect he noted was the call to social action for every priest, “in particular the Supreme Pontiff.”
