Krakow and Auschwitz, hosts of the next Sant'Egidio interreligious encounter.

"John Paul II journeys at our side in the spirit of Assisi; this is the spirit that inspired last year's encounter in Naples – among us is Cardinal Sepe; it is the spirit that has been lived here and the same spirit will accompany us next year in Krakow and Auschwitz."

The interreligious encounter promoted by the Community of Sant'Egidio in Cyprus ended on November 18. During the concluding joint prayer for peace, the community's founder, Andrea Ricardi, announced before religious and political leaders that the next encounter will be in Krakow, Poland. During a press conference a few hours before the encounter, Ricardi explained the reason for the selection of this city.

"Because John Paul II is from Krakow but also because this is where Auschwitz is. Our project is a congress in Krakow and a pilgrimage to Auschwitz; this is where evil dawned and where the process of European unification and of a whole new culture of peace restarted."

After this encounter in Cyprus there is no doubt that Pope Wojtyla continues to inspire interreligious dialogue.

"Krakow is very important, it is one of the oldest and most important cities of Europe, the house where John Paul II studied is in Krakow and that is where he became a bishop, so there are many memories."

"With Assisi, John Paul II created an event, however he wanted it to continue and we are convinced that this event will continue."
