Vatican Offers Photo Resources for JPII Beatification.

The Vatican has set up an internet facility for Catholic media, enabling them to have free access to photographs of John Paul II's beatification.

The Vatican says the aim is to encourage a sharing of resources among those involved in communications on behalf of the Church.

Msgr. Paul Tighe, Secretary of the Pontifical Council for Social Communications:
Many don't have resources or means to send someone or have the best professional photographers to have photos for their websites, for their local publications, so we decided to make available to them online photographs that allow them to share with their readers, their watchers, their followers on internet something of the atmosphere of the three days.

The Pontifical Council for Social Communications has asked two young priests in Rome from the Spanish College to take photographs of all the major events of the three days and then post the images on the Picasa and Flickr photo sharing websites.

Msgr. Paul Tighe
The hope is to model a way of sharing together so we can take advantage of the possibilities new technology gives us to enrich the quality of our communications.

The initiative is part of the Intermirifica.net project which aims to create an online directory of all Catholic communication resources around the world and encourage the exchange. The Vatican is urging Catholic media to take part in making this a valuable resource for the Church.

Msgr. Paul Tighe
I would very much like to encourage people who are involved in communications ministry in church, to visit the intermirifca.net website and to see the various headings, categories represented and make their own information available...What we need is people from the bottom up people begin to use this resource, give us the information – there's no such thing as too much information in this category – make us aware of what they're doing and then we can ensure that their efforts are appreciated by others.
