Fraternal Cooperation with the Orthodox

Vatican

Yesterday Pope Benedict met with bishops from Belarus at the conclusion of their Ad Limina visit. Formation, catechesis, and collaboration with the Orthodox world were the issues highlighted by the Holy Father. The Pope called for "concrete gestures" to affirm a brotherhood of peace, especially by invoking the "fraternal cooperation of the Orthodox Church of Belarus, whose pastors share" in a common commitment to the good of the faithful".

Irish Bishop Resigns Under Pressure

Ireland

Bishop Donal Murray of Limerick, Ireland, has resigned under pressure. An inquiry into the handling of sexual abuse in Dublin had reported that Bishop Murray had “inexcusably” failed to take action on complaints while he served as an auxiliary bishop there. Bishop Murray announced his resignation at the Limerick cathedral on December 17, just as the Vatican released an official statement.

A Nasty Pre-Christmas Surprise

New Zealand

A billboard depicting Our Lady looking dejected after unsatisfying sex with Joseph has given New Zealand Catholics a nasty pre-Christmas surprise. The huge ad erected in downtown Auckland yesterday showed the unhappy couple in bed accompanied by the slogan:. It was the brainchild of a progressive Anglican church whose vicar Archdeacon says it was a cutting-edge strategy to engage non-believers. But the city's Catholic diocese is not impressed, saying the implication that Mary and Joseph had just had sex was "disrespectful'' and "offensive'' to Christians.

Milingo Defrocked

Vatican

Renegade former Archbishop Emmanuel Milingo has been defrocked, the Vatican announced on December 17. Milingo has launched a worldwide crusade for married priests, under the influence of the Moon-sect. The former bishop was canonical suspended in 2001 after he flew to New York to participate in a mass marriage ceremony. In this ceremony he was joined to a Korean woman. In 2006 he was excommunicated. Because he “has shown no sign of the desired repentance,” the Vatican statement said, “the Holy See has therefore been obliged to impose upon him the further penalty of dismissal from the clerical state.”
