25th anniversary of the Peace Treaty between Chile-Argentina.

On Saturday, Benedict XVI will receive in audience Michelle Bachelet, president of Chile, and Cristina Fernández de Kirchner, president of Argentina.

The occasion will mark the 25th anniversary of the Peace and Friendship Treaty signed by the two countries on November 29th, 1984, under the mediation of the Vatican and led by John Paul II, which at the time avoided a conflict between Chile and Argentina.

The intermediary of the conciliation was Cardinal Antonio Samorè, who had as one of his direct collaborators Archbishop Faustino Sainz, current Apostolic Nuncio to Great Britain. In a recent interview, Archbishop Sainz explained that the most important lesson of the event is that any problem can be solved with dialogue, because with dialogue the rights of each party are more easily identified, and a just, peaceful, honorable and satisfying solution for everyone can be reached. This, he said, was the case of the solution found by the Holy See for the dispute regarding the southern insular territories.
