During the Chrism Mass on Holy Thursday, Francis said a pastor must have “the smell of sheep”. Since then, Bishop Virgilio Pante, pastor of Maralar and a Consolata missionary from Belluno, Italy, had the idea of giving the Pope a mitre made from sheepskin.

He was able to give the Pope this original liturgical headpiece before this morning’s mass and Francis decided to wear it during the celebration at Central Park, at the University of Nairobi. Mgr. Pante is leader of the Kenyan diocese which is home to the Nilo-Hamitic shepherds.
