Arlington Diocese parishioners question need for fidelity oath
Kathleen Riley knows her beliefs on the male-only priesthood and contraception put her at odds with leaders of her church. But as a fifth-generation Catholic who went to a Catholic school and grew up to teach in one, Riley feels the faith deeply woven through her. So when her Arlington parish asked for volunteers last summer to teach Sunday school, she felt called by the Holy Spirit to say yes.
A year later, the 52-year-old computer scientist feels the same spirit calling her to say no.
Last month, Riley joined at least four other Sunday school teachers and resigned from her post at St. Ann’s parish after a letter arrived at her home requiring her — and all teachers in the Arlington Catholic Diocese — to submit “of will and intellect” to all of the teachings of church leaders.

When Pope Saint Pius X was dealing with the modernists he issued the oath against modernists. Every priest and every teacher of the Catholic faith was required to swear to it and then sign it. At least these young women, who no doubt were themselves taught by modernists, did the right thing.

Under St. Pius the X they went underground. After taking the oath they continued to teach their errors. The proponents of the "novel theologie" from France and Germany and the Netherlands taught the same errors as the modernists. (and took the same oath)They were censured but then invited to be the lead theological advisors at the Second Vatican Council.

I am reminded of how bitterly communist teachers said they “resented” having to sign loyalty oaths that they were not now, nor had ever been communists. The truth was that the only reason they had become teachers in the first place was *not* to teach, but to soapbox, cajole, coerce, and indoctrinate students about communism.

The same with the blacklisted Hollywood communists. Though the evidence that they were communists was overwhelming, none of them ever admitted it, or disavowed it. They just cursed those who caught them at it, and their efforts to subvert the entertainment industry.

So what do these women want? They do not accept the church for what it is. They demand that the church change its teachings to accommodate them. Does anyone think such people would be acceptable teachers?

At this point, all we know is the teachers resigned, which was the correct thing to do. And more “obedient”, if you will, than the protesting “nuns” we’ve seeing. So for that I will give them credit.

Infuriating. But not surprising.

To me, it's above all a matter of preventing consumer fraud. If people are sending their kids of Catholic instruction, they have a right to know that Catholicism is actually being taught.

If you don't use the Colonel's recipe, it's not KFC. If you leave out key ingredients in the Special Sauce, it's not a Mig Mac. Surely the Catholic Church has as much legitimate interest in maintaining product integrity as McDonalds does? Good for Bishop Loverde. If these women neither believe in nor practice "whole" Catholcism, they can take their sesame seed buns elsewhere.
