Unqualified Acceptance of the Last Council?

Switzerland

In the July Newsletter for the Diocese of Basel in Switzerland, the local Bishop Kurt Koch has written an article giving a forthright reply to a recent petition for the "unqualified acceptance of the council”. Koch is also the President of the Swiss Bishops' Conference. He says: Right from the start, the expression "unqualified acceptance" of the Council irritates me because I don’t know anyone — myself included — to whom it would apply. He then gives examples from the Council to which many "vocal defenders" would not give "unqualified acceptance", the first two being the instruction that the Latin language should be retained in the Liturgy and that Gregorian Chant should be given pride of place.

The Pope Mentioned it Again

Vatican

Yesterday on the Feast of Saints Peter and Paul before the recitation of the Angelus, Pope Benedict XVI referred once again to his forthcoming social encyclical, Caritas in Veritate. The Holy Father reminded his audience that the encyclical, when its "rapidly approaching" publication date arrives, will bear “today's date”.

Celibacy is a Free Decision

Kenya

Amid national media coverage of priests who have failed to keep their sacred promise of celibacy, Cardinal John Njue of Nairobi is urging the faithful to “fight on” and remember that “the Church has never forced anyone to be a priest. It only dictates that if you want to be one you have to subscribe to the principle of celibacy.” The cardinal added that any priest who “wanted to opt out of that call was free to do so.

Bishops Against Gay March

Bulgaria

A joint letter signed by five Bulgarian Catholic and Protestant leaders has denounced a June 27 gay pride march in Sofia. “As representatives of Christian religion in Bulgaria we want to express our deepest concern about the organizing of a gay parade in Sofia for a second year in a row,” said the letter: “Such parades discredit the authority of the family institution as a union between a man and a woman.” The letter follows condemnations of the march by the Bulgarian Orthodox patriarch and the leader of the nation’s Muslims.
