Vatican Finance Ministry: On Monday, Pope Francis published the Motu Proprio “Fidelis Dispensator et Prudens” with which he institutes the Secretary for Economy, an authority that in future will control all economical and financial matters of the Vatican State and the Holy See. Sydney Cardinal George Pell will be the first prefect of the institution. Gloria.tv believes that it is a waste to use one of the few orthodox Cardinals on the Pope’s Council for matters of administration.
Strange Friend: On January 14 Pope Francis had a private meeting with a certain Anthony Palmer who used his cell phone to record a message of the Pope for a meeting of some Pentecostals in Texas. In his sentimental address Francis says: "I'm here with my brother, my brother bishop, Tony Palmer.” On his blog the Anglican convert and now Catholic priest, Father Dwight Longenecker points out that Palmer is not a regular Anglican bishop. He suspects that Palmer belongs to one of the many Anglican schism groups. According to the Vatican the Anglicans have no valid orders.
Rebels Attempted to Rape Nuns: Muslim rebels withdrawing from the Central African Republic to Chad attacked a mission station near the border with Chad. Two nuns, originally from Europe, and a voluntary helper were sexually assaulted. According to Fr Aurelio Gazzera, Director of Caritas in Bouar Diocese – quote a rebels held his gun to the head of one sisters and tried to force her to undress. The other Sister and the voluntary helper were also sexually molested but finally were left alone. The sister asked that their names and the convent's location be withheld.
Black Sisters: Shannen Dee Williams has celebrated unsung black U.S. Catholic nuns and lay women on uscatholic.org. In the 18th century black women constituted the majority of the church’s membership in New Orleans. Between 1824 and 1922 at least eight black orders where established, of which only three still exist. Black nuns co-founded the Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary in Monroe, Michigan in 1845 and the Old Rite Benedictines of Mary, Queen Apostles in Scranton, Pennsylvania in 1995.
