Located in San Diego Mission Valley on San Diego Mission Road, the California mission was the first mission and first church in California. California Mission San Diego, a minor basilica, was established in 1769 by Padre Junipero Serra and Father Luis Jayme. This historic landmark is also the birthplace of the West Coast's agriculture industry and home of California's first martyr, Jayme, who was killed by the native Kumeyaay Indians during a 1775 riot. Today, the San Diego Mission is open to the public for tours, housing a small museum of religious artifacts. Mission weddings are also held here in the two on-site chapels.
