Pope: The Wisdom of God is born in Bethlehem.

“To help others discover the true face of God is the first form of charity, which for you takes on the quality of intellectual charity.” With these words Benedict XVI inaugurated the Christmas Novena during the celebration of Vespers with members of the Roman universities in St. Peter’s Basilica on December 17th.

The Pope invited students and professors to build an authentic civilization of love. “The future of society,” he said, “greatly depends on your universities, especially for the creation of a new humanistic synthesis and a new planning ability.”

Speaking of Christmas, the Pontiff explained that the Wisdom of God is born in Bethlehem, a God who out of love does not hesitate to take on the human condition. “A Christian professor or a young Christian student,” Benedict XVI said during the homily, “carries within him the passionate love for this Wisdom! We read all in its light: we discover its traces in the elementary particles and in the verses of poets; in the legal codes and the events of history; in works of art and in mathematical expressions.”

The Holy Father then invited everyone to “approach the Grotto of Bethlehem”, which is not an obstacle to our modernity:

Benedict XVI: “In that Grotto, each of us can discover the truth about God and man. In that Baby, born of the Virgin, they are found: man’s longing for eternal life has softened the heart of God, who was not ashamed of taking on the human condition.”
