Pope preaches hope, condemns sexual violence in Angola.

Angola recognizes that a time of hope has come for Africa. In this manner, Benedict XVI addressed the political and diplomatic corps on the first day of his visit to Luanda, the Angolan capital, commencing the second and final stage of his trip to Africa.

The Pope said that Africa’s economic and social development requires the coordination of the national government with regional initiatives and international decisions. However, he recalled that the Africans themselves must be the primary agents of their own development.

Benedict XVI also spoke of discrimination against women and condemned the “unspeakable practice” of sexual violence and exploitation that causes so much humiliation and trauma to women.

The Church, he concluded, is on the side of the continent’s poor, will continue to do all that is possible to support the families wounded by the tragic effects of AIDS, and will promote the equal dignity of men and women on the basis of harmonious complementarity.
