Get Over It: A front-page story in Sunday’s Philadelphia Inquirer on the World Meeting of Families next month wants to know why there is just one session on homosex issues at the World Meeting of Families. Catholic League’s Bill Donohue gives the answer: “The event is featuring over 100 speakers, and gays comprise 1.6 percent of the population. Seems about right.” And: “The only segments of society that are unhappy with the program are gays and their allies in the media. Time for them to get over it.”

Jewish Cardinal Died: The retired primate of Hungary, Cardinal Laszlo Paskai, died on August 17 at the age of 88. Paskai, a Franciscan, was born to Jewish parents who had converted to the Church before and who were killed by the National-Socialists. He spend fourty years as a priest and bishop under Communist persecution. Requiescat in pace.

Syrian Tragedy: Chaldean-Catholic bishop Antoine Audo of Aleppo, Syria said in an interview that half of the 30.000 Christians have left the city and that 10 out of 23 million Syrians are refugees. But many Moslems have respect for the Christians. Quote: “Yesterday I came out of my residence in episcopal garb to go to extend my condolences to a family, when a Muslim crossed my way saying: "I owe respect to your person.” Audo says that in the beginning of the crisis he cultivated hope as his main theological virtue but four years later he returned to faith. He believes that the West wants to balkanize the Middle East, to sell arms and to have Sunnies fighting against Shiites.

Backstabbers: In July bishop Vitus Huonder of Chur, Switzerland, quoted in a speech Leviticus 18 and 20 where God says that homosexual acts are an abomination punishable with death. Huonder added: "These two passages alone would be enough to give the right turn to the issue of homosexuality from the perspective of faith." Since then, he is under media attack although he apologized and retracted twice. Now, his own press officer, Giuseppe Gracia, turned against him. He said he was “shocked” about the bishop’s statement and that the diocese was in crisis because of it.
