Benedict XVI to the Hungarian bishops: Catholic Church is both mother and teacher.
"Despite secularization, the Catholic Church remains for many Hungarians a religious community of belonging, or at least a significant reference point. "
In his speech to the bishops of Hungary at the end of their visit to Rome, Benedict XVI realistically described the negative consequences
of the communist regime, which now overlap with the difficult economic conditions and a "reckless consumerism", causing the family to suffer most of all, to the point of crisis, as well as young people. Therefore it is important that the Church place much attention on the
new generation, on schools, on efforts to evangelize the culture and increase the knowledge of Scripture, as well as update traditional pastoral initiatives, such as pilgrimages and devotion to Hungarian Saints. The Pope also emphasized the importance of friendly cooperation with State authorities, especially in education, culture and service to the weaker social classes, and encouraged positive ecumenical contacts and collaboration with the bishops of neighboring nations where there are substantial Hungarian minorities.
