CIUDAD DEL VATICANO (AP) - El papa Benedicto XVI bautizó el domingo a 21 bebés durante una ceremonia privada en la Capilla Sixtina que marcó el fin de la temporada de Navidad.

Durante el acto, algunos de los recién nacidos lloraron, otros se retorcieron y algunos siguieron dormidos.

Bajo el fresco del "Juicio final" de Miguel Angel, el Papa virtió agua en las frentes de un total de 21 bebés, 13 varones y ocho mujeres. Todos los recién nacidos, de entre cuatro semanas y cuatro meses, son hijos de empleados de El Vaticano.

El pontífice oró por la vida y salud de los recién nacidos, "para que puedan crecer y madurar adheridos a la fe".

Benedicto XVI dijo que en una sociedad cambiante sin referentes culturales firmes, se ha vuelto más difícil inculcar la fe en los hijos. El Papa exhortó a las parroquias y los padres a que cooperen en este propósito.

La ceremonia anual tiene lugar en el primer domingo posterior a la Epifanía del 6 de enero.

VATICAN CITY – Pope Benedict XVI baptized 21 newborns in an intimate ceremony in the Sistine Chapel on Sunday that marked the end of the Christmas season.
Standing under Michelangelo's magnificent "Last Judgment" fresco, the pope poured water on the foreheads of 13 baby boys and eight baby girls. Some babies screamed, other squirmed, some slept through it.
Benedict prayed for their "life and health so they can grow and mature in the faith."
He said that, in an ever-changing society without firm cultural references, it has become more difficult to educate children in the faith, and urged parishes and parents to cooperate.
The babies — aged between four weeks and four months — are all children of Vatican employees.
The annual ceremony is held the first Sunday after the Jan. 6 Epiphany.
