Columbian Cardinal López Trujillo passed away in Rome.

Colombian Cardinal Alfonso Lòpez Trujillo, President of the Pontifical Council for the Family, died at the age of 72 on Saturday, April 19 from a respiratory infection, reported sources from the Pius XI Clinic, where he was hospitalized.

This Cardinal was the promoter of the World Encounter of Families. He was elevated to Cardinal on February 2, 1983 by John Paul II. He was President of the Columbian Episcopal Conference from 1987 to 1990. On November 8, 1990 Pope Karol Wojtyla appointed him President of the Pontifical Council for the Family.

The President of the Columbian Episcopal Conference, Archbishop Luis Augusto Castro Quiroga, said that "the death of Cardinal López Trujillo is a great loss for the Bishops and the Church of Columbia."

The funeral service will be on Wednesday, April 23 in Rome. He will be buried in the Church of Saint Ann.

With the death of Cardinal Lòpez Trujillo, the College of Cardinals now has 195 members, 118 who are electors and 77 who are non-electors, being 80 or older.
