The Pope Speaks on Art

Vatican

The Holy Father dedicated his catechesis at yesterday’s general audience to the Christian art of the Middle Ages. He emphasized two elements of the art of that epoch which are useful today: First, this art is incomprehensible without the religious spirit which motivated it. This spirit lead to an encounter of faith and art which made the Invisible visible. Second, the way of beauty, is a privileged path to draw closer to the Mystery of God.

Soon Venerable?

Vatican

The cause for beatification of Pope John Paul II has cleared a crucial hurdle. The Polish Pontiff could now be beatified with the approval of a miracle through his intercession. Italian journalist Andrea Tornielli reported this week that the Congregation for the Causes of Saints has voted to approve a decree testifying to the "heroic virtue" of John Paul II. Once this decree is officially approved by the Pope, John Paul would acquire the title of "venerable" and would be eligible for beatification as soon as Vatican officials attest to the authenticity of a miracle attributed to his intercession.

Future of the Anglican Church is "Chaotic and Uncertain"

UK

At a sermon last week, delivered at All Saints, Margaret Street at a service to mark the 150th anniversary of the London church's consecration Archbishop of Canterbury Rowan Williams said that the future of the Anglican Church is "chaotic and uncertain" as dozens of married priests consider leaving for the Roman Catholic Church. “God knows what the future holds” said the archbishop. In an attempt to reach out to Anglican priests who were unsure whether to switch, he said: “it was still possible "to lead lives of Catholic holiness even in the communion of the See of Canterbury."

Fr Finigan has commented on his blog “The Hermeneutic of Continuity” on Pope Paul VI's General Audience address for the 26 of November 1969. In this address the then pope spoke about the "liturgical innovation of the new rite of the Mass" which was to be introduced on the first Sunday of Advent, four days later. The Pope asked in his address: “So what is to be done on this special and historical occasion?” And answered: “First of all, we must prepare ourselves. This novelty is no small thing.“ Fr. Finigan comments: “Four days is not much time to prepare”.
