Jesus loved the Pharisees but they were on the wrong path because they reduced their rich and revealed religion to following external rules and laws. This made them very judgmental against others who did not follow the 613 laws. That made them feel superior which in turn led to their internal corruption. People do the same today with Christianity and religion. Reduce the faith to following external rules and regulations and you reduce the faith. Now neither Jesus nor St. Paul lessened the importance of the moral law. Both in fact elevated the moral standards that we must live by. However, both saw the danger of a lifeless legalism.
