First, the two men have recently been placed in important leadership positions to assist Pope Benedict XVI in his efforts to revitalize the Catholic Faith. The Pope calls it "New Evangelization" and he has established an entirely new bureaucratic department in Rome to oversee this important function.

The American, Bishop Ricken has been elected asthe new chairman to The U.S.Conference of Catholic Bishop's committee for Evangelization and Catechesis. He takes over this month. The European is CardinalChristopf Schonborn, and he is one of the first members assigned to the new Vatican departmentcalled “the Pontifical Council for Promotingthe New Evangelization”.

“New Evangelization” writes Michael Sean of the National Catholic Reporter "is designed to re-introduce a sense of wonder, not just a sense of comprehension, about the claims at the heart of our faith.Put differently, as Archbishop Martin of Dublin observed, Ireland may be themost catechized and least evangelized culture in Europe. That distinctionbetween catechesis and evangelization is at the heart of what the NewEvangelization is about."
