By following the example of Christ who died and rose to show the way of God, the believer is encouraged to help shape society where everyone receives all that is necessary to live according to their dignity as men, and where justice is animated by love.
Benedict XVI makes this clear in his message for Lent, which was presented this morning in the Vatican press office. The Cross, where the just die for the guilty, shows that man needs God in order to be fully himself. Being converted to Christ means to leave the illusion of self-sufficiency. Injustice, the Gospel says, has its origin in the human heart. One is freed from the desire of possession and a mentality of selfishness by sharing the mystery of God, which frees man through the sacrifice of the Son to engage in actions marked by justice, goodness, and concern for social progress.
