Former Secretary of Archbishop Romero Fired After Abuse Allegations

The Archdiocese of San Salvador said on Thursday it had fired Father Jesus Delgado, 77, a former secretary of murdered Archbishop Oscar Romero after allegations that he abused a now 42 year old woman when she was between 9 and 17.

Delgado was the biographer and personal secretary of the Salvadoran Archbishop Oscar Romero.

Pope Francis has criticized conservative clergy and bishops who he said “defamed” Romero.
Francis unblocked Romero’s sainthood process and Romero was beatified in May. Delgado attended several high-level meetings with Vatican officials to request the ceremony.
Delgado may not be pursued in the courts because the alleged crime happened more than 20 years ago.
