My first Penjing.

A corner of my desk showing my first miniature tree. Although commonly called bonsai, this is actually the Japanese pronunciation of the earlier Chinese term ''penzai' or 'pen jing' (盆栽), literally "tray scenery". The word 'pen jing' first appeared in writing in China during the Jin Dynasty, in the period 265AD – 420AD. Over time, the practice developed into new forms in various parts of China, Japan, Korea, Vietnam and Thailand. This plant is the Fujian Tea plant, a tropical shrub originating in southern China and other parts of southeast Asia. It is particularly nice for me as the hedges of the house where I grew up was formed from this plant.
