Abuse Charge Against the Vatican Misled the American Public

Three Kentucky plaintiffs have abandoned a lawsuit against the Vatican. They sought to make the Vatican responsible for clerical abuse that took place in the United States. Jeffrey Lena, the attorney representing the Holy See commented the decision in a statement on August 9th: “This development confirms that, contrary to what the plaintiffs’ lawyers repeatedly told the media, there has never been a Holy See policy requiring concealment of child sexual abuse.” He added: “The theory crafted by the plaintiffs’ lawyers six years ago misled the American public.”

Archbishop emeritus Oscar Cruz of Lingayen-Dagupan in the Philippines has reminding Catholics that those procuring an abortion incur an automatic excommunication. The excommunication, says the archbishop, affects “the woman concerned, the husband who helped her, the abortionist, [and] the nurses” who actively participated in the abortion. The online radio of the Filipino Bishops Conference reported inaccurately on the archbishop’s comments. The radio claimed falsely, that “in the Catholic Church today, there are only two sins whereby the penalty of excommunication is involved and abortion is not among them.”

L’Osservatore Romano Defends Altar Girls

In an article in L’Osservatore Romano, Lucetta Scaraffia defended the 1994 Vatican decision to permit female altar servers. Ms Scaraffia is a 62-year-old journalist and historian. In her article she describes service at the altar as an unmatched formative experience that allows children to collaborate directly with the central mystery of the faith. Ms. Scaraffia claimes that permitting girls to serve at the altar “has meant the idea they were impure because of their gender came to an end.” She noted that girls constituted the majority of the tens of thousands of altar servers who met with the Pope last week.

83-year-old Robert Wilson has donated 5.6 million Dollars to Archdiocese of New York. Wilson is an atheist. He made his fortune managing a hedge fund, The gift will help Catholic schools track down and solicit funds from alumni. “Most of what the Catholic schools teach are the three Rs,” says Mr. Wilson, referring to reading, writing and arithmetic. “And they do it better than the union-controlled inner-city schools.”
