GAITHERSBURG, MD, March 1, 2012 (LifeSiteNews) - In the wake of international press coverage of a priest’s decision to deny a lesbian communion, and the woman’s subsequent demands that he be removed from the parish, a source close to the incident contacted LifeSiteNews with new information that he says will set the record straight.
Among other things, the new information indicates that the woman did actually receive Communion at the Mass – but from an Extraordinary minister rather than the priest.
Fr. Marcel Guarnizo of St. John Neumann Catholic Church in Gaithersburg, Maryland, was reprimanded by the Archdiocese of Washington this week after denying communion to Johnson at her mother’s funeral. Johnson had informed the priest before the Mass that she was a lesbian, and was denied communion when she presented herself in line.

I can agree wholeheartedly that her actions should be condemned (by legitimate authorities) without name calling. Every sinner is a "dirty rotten Judas, selling out Our Lord for the price of whatever their sin got them". But do we really need to go around pouring that kind of hatred on one another? I can agree wholeheartedly that her actions should be condemned (by legitimate authorities) without name calling. Absolutely it's reprehensible. It's doubly reprehensible that the priest isn't hailed as a hero instead of criticized. Those are facts. "So and so is a dirty, rotten... and should go to ..." kind of comments are not facts. They are hatred. They serve for nothing else. There is no defense for hatred. Lesbianism is one horrible sin. Hatred is another deadly sin. Slander, detraction, calumny and such are also detestable sins. All have added to the wounds of Our Lord, Christ.

There is nothing weak or wimpy about love that keeps us from hatred. Virtue, on the contrary, is the most manly thing that there is. Just indignation is one thing. Speaking evil of one's neighbor is a sin. None of us is her priest, her bishop, her parent, her sibling, etc... that it is even our place to be discussing her sins. Certainly we have no right to hate her for them. Personal, negative remarks are a sign of hatred, and reflect an inner spirit of animosity that goes beyond "just indignation."

Just indignation means that as Catholics we are appalled at the evils. Saying, "how horrible!" is a good example of just indignation. Personal name calling and evil wishing are of the devil and hatred, and we can express our just indignation without any sign them. And we can certainly express our charity better by praying for sinners than publicly, verbally eviscerating them. Hateful words and ill-wishing never converted anyone, but at the prayers and penances of holy souls, many souls have been converted. Those are also facts. There is nothing wimpy about prayer.
