During a class discussion, he mentioned that most deaths in Indigenous residential schools were due to disease. A student complained, and the school district ruled that his comments were "inappropriate". McMurtry knows that his statements were historically accurate and argues that he was dismissed for challenging widely accepted narratives. He was officially fired on February 21, 2025.
